Sourdough Sweet Hawaiian Rolls
Delicious sourdough sweet hawaiian rolls made with fermented sourdough, pineapple juice and without refined sugar are a healthy game day recipe. This may seem odd for fall, but pair these sourdough sweet hawaiian dinner rolls with some tangy, savory pulled pork or mini sliders. It is sure to be a crowd pleaser this football season.
With football season upon us, I can’t help myself but to come up with easy and delicious Sunday meals to eat after church while we are watching the game. There is something so fun about game day appetizers. I love to make them into simple meals for the whole family to enjoy. These sourdough sweet hawaiian rolls do not disappoint!
I love to start meals the night before or the morning of church so that we can come home to relax and enjoy a tasty meal. They are so easy to put together and with minimal ingredients, it’s not something that’s too difficult to make.
One thing I love about sourdough, besides the amazing health benefits, is that I can do most of the work while I’m cleaning up dinner from the evening. It’s a nice quiet time. I get to put ingredients into my kitchenaid mixer and watch the dough form.
While the dough is forming, I cleanup the rest of the kitchen for the evening. Although it’s nice to have the dough forming while I’m cleaning up everything else, I do particularly enjoy the act of kneading dough. It’s kind of therapeutic for me. Especially when I’m in there all alone and the kids are listening to my husband read them a story. With the seasons changing and the nights getting earlier, it’s a cozy special time in my home.
The night before, I whip up the dough so that we can have warm dinner rolls for lunch or dinner the next day.
Benefits and Tips for Sourdough
- You must have a fed and active sourdough starter to use for this recipe. If you do not have one, I recommend checking out farmhouse on boone for tips on starting one.
- Sourdough acts as a prebiotic this means that it helps feed the “good” bacteria in your intestines.
- Sourdough can help to maintain a stable, healthy digestive system.
- It may also lower the risk for chronic disease and may even promote healthy aging
- Lower in gluten than other forms of bread, so many people with gluten intolerances are able to digest sourdough.
Tips for Sourdough Hawaiian Rolls
- Don’t over knead or under knead your bread. If it passes the window pane test, then you are good to go.
- If it is too sticky, you may add more flour but the honey does make this a stickier dough.
What to Serve with Sourdough Hawaiian Rolls
Depending on the time of day you will be eating these rolls, that will help you decide how you should serve them.
Breakfast
If I’m serving these rolls with breakfast, just some butter with a side of eggs and bacon is a perfect sweet and salty combo. You could also serve it as a breakfast sandwich. If you have tried the chic-fil-a breakfast than you know all about the sweet biscuits with crispy chicken. Now, that sounds like a perfect breakfast!
Lunch
I love to serve these rolls with some honey ham and spicy mustard. Another great option would be to add pickles and make it into a cuban sandwich. Honestly you can’t go wrong with how you serve these hawaiian rolls because the sweetness just compliments everything!
Dinner
Use these sourdough hawaiian rolls as your classic dinner rolls with some butter and they’ll sure be a hit! Another great idea is to fill them with pulled pork or bbq chicken. Since these rolls are small, you could also make a fun dinner with homemade mini sliders. I’m sure the kids would love that!
